Malaga is a great city to have as a home base if you want to travel around southern Spain. Southern Spain has so much to offer. I highly recommend taking the time to explore this part part of the country.

Malaga is a city that already has lots of things to do but is also close to beautiful towns and cities. Here is a list of 5 road trips you can take from Malaga:

NERJA AND FRIGILIANA

Only a 50 minutes drive will bring you to these two charming cities full of character. Nerja and Frigiliana are very close to each other, only a 15 min drive a part. You will see beautiful views from both Nerja and Frigiliana.

Nerja has must visit places like “El Balcon de Europa” (Europe’s Balcony). You will see an amazing view of the coastline. A great place to grab a drink and enjoy where you are.

Frigiliana is a town with all white houses and colourful doors. Can’t forget to mention lots of pretty and vibrant flowers and greenery around.

CORDOBA

Cordoba is located only 2hrs away from Malaga. A city filled with history and beautiful sites and architecture. You will have a chance to visit known places like the Mosque – Cathedral of Cordoba, a breathtaking monument in South of Spain.

The Mosque-Cathedral of Cordoba has the famous white and red striped arches and as you wander around you see all the different details from different eras.

Another must visit in Cordoba is the Alcazar of the Christian Monarchs. This site was once a castle and a fortress. You will see stunning courtyards and gardens.

GRANADA

You can’t come to southern spain and not visit Granada. It has the iconic Alhambra which is a must. Only 1hr and 45 min away drive will bring you all the way to Granada. It was initially built as a military space but then became the royalties residence. You can easily spend hours wondering through all 3 main areas: The Alcazaba, Generalife and the Nasrid Palace.

You have many others sites to explore like Plaza Nueva, Plaza Larga and the Albaicin.

RONDA

A little over 1hr and ½ drive you will get to this unique and charmic city. What makes this city so unique is the fact that it has been built on top of the Tajo gorge. A city that has to be seen at least once in your life.

Other sites to check out are the arab baths, Duquesa de Parcent Square, Cuenca Gardens and the Mirador de Aldehuela

BENALMADENA

Benalmadena is located only 30 mins away from Malaga. Easy to get to by car or even taking the train. Known for the Colomares Castle, a monument built in honor of Christopher Columbus. A breathtaking monument worth the visit, entrance fee is only 2,50 euros.

Also known for their waterpark and other attractions like their cable car. Benalmadena has a variety of activities to enjoy and many of them are kids friendly.
