Granada is a city in southern Spain about 1 hour and 45 minutes from Malaga, known for its Arab influence. Located on the foothill of Sierra Nevada. People are drawn year after year to Granada because of the well known Alhambra.
While deciding where to visit next, we thought it was time to visit Granada. This time we chose to make our way there by bus. We usually rent a car for our day trips but taking the bus sounded more relaxing.
How to get there?
There are many ways to get to Granada either plane, train or car. Like I mentioned before we decided to go by bus specifically booked through Alsa. The cost for the whole bus trip for both of us was 59.18 euros. Not bad in our opinion, very comfortable seats and everything you need on the bus. We have rented a car before and by the end taking the bus was cheaper.
The bus ride was 1 hour and 45 minutes from Malaga perfect for a day trip.
Things to do in Granada?
Visit the Alhambra: One of Spain’s most visited monuments. A palace and fortress located on the hill surrounded by mountains and so much nature. Initially built as a military space but then became the royalties residence. It has 3 main areas: The Alcazaba, Generalife and the Nasrid Palace.
*Tips: Keep in mind you can easily spend 4 hours at the Alhambra. It has so many different areas and beautiful spaces. Also, buy your tickets ahead of time. Tickets can be sold out 3 months before depending on the time of the year, . If visiting around summer time, I would recommend not visiting during peak heat hours. It is all open spaces and involves lots of walking around so be aware. Also because of the previous point, bring comfortable shoes, water and wear sunscreen.
Plaza Larga: It is a small plaza surrounded by two or three restaurants. Very popular and known by tourists and locals. Some days there is a market during the morning. When we went we didn’t have the best experience. I think we just went at a bad time. A family was having a party right at the plaza when we went and many people were drunk on the floor. I’ve heard that it is a great place to sit down, grab some tapas and a drink. We left without the best experience so we will give it another shot next time we visit.
Plaza Nueva: Another well known plaza. A very vibrant plaza surrounded by important monuments and buildings. Lots of street vendors, restaurants, stores and ice shops around. Highly recommend going for a walk and heading towards calle Darro.
Carrera del Darro: It is a charming and lovely narrow street next to the Darro river. A street great for a walk either at night or during the day. As you walk you get a great view of the outer walls of the Alhambra. Near many restaurants and bars. It has 2 bridges called the Cabrera and Espinosa. Great area for pictures and for people watching.
Where to eat?
Granada like many cities in Spain are filled with many restaurants and bars. We decided to go for lunch at Rosario Varela. Which was a great recommendation by another blogger.
Rosario Varela:
They offer many seafood dishes, and offer vegetarian and vegan options as well. It has a great atmosphere and wide variety of tapas. They give you a tapa per drink…which is awesome!! If you have to wait a bit don’t be surprised, it was busy. The staff is very friendly and helpful.
Transportation in Granada.
It was easy to get around in Granada. Bus system is reliable and affordable. We caught two busses to our first stop which was the Alhambra. Like I said it was very easy, as soon as we arrived at the bus station we went outside and the bus stop was right there. The cost per bus ride was 1.40 per person. Of course, there are always cabs if you prefer that.

Next time we go to Granada we will definitely visit for 2-3 days. One day was not enough, so much left to see. Highly recommend Granada, it is a beautiful and charming city filled with history.
